As per the report dated July 3, 2017 Monday, common medicines for the problem of burning of the heart like Prilosec, Prevacid or Nexium and many more added to the list should be avoided for consumption for long periods of time. The reason behind the same is cited as the chances of early death if taken for a longer period. These H2 antagonist medicines should not be taken without proper consultation and prescription of the doctor over the years.

Direct relation between H2 antagonist medicines and early risk of death

If one goes by the words of senior researcher Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, before time death is bound to take place if the medicines in the category of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are consumed for longer duration. Duration of consumption of these H2 antagonist medicines has a straight relation with risk of preliminary death. Thus, the same must be used cautiously and with the prescription of the elder doctors only.

It is safe to consume them for longer periods simply under the proper guidance and consultation with the senior doctors. H2 antagonist medicines can definitely save lives, even when taken for extended duration but only as prescribed by the doctors. Without that, it could do unavoidable blunders and should be avoided at all costs.

Excessive use of medicines is harmful

Overuse of these medicines might lead to kidney diseases, fractures, pneumonia, even dementia, various kinds of bacterial infections and cardiovascular diseases too. As per a study, people taking proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) regularly for long points of time face the risk of early death due to any of the reasons by 25% in comparison to the people taking H2 blockers. This study has been carried out for a period of five years and covers almost every detail without missing on any.

Some of the facts related to the proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) listed as below:

  • Almost 8% American population has been prescribed a PPI.
  • PPIs are available Over the Counter (OTC) in lower potencies as generally prescribed.
  • About 70% of the population is not in the need for the same.

People feel since they are available easily, hence they are very safe to be consumed and can do so whenever they feel like. These medications pose serious risks to one’s health if taken for long. They tend to reduce the life of the person taking them and shorten it by few years. The main outcome of any of the studies related to these medicines states that they are harmful and increase the risk of death in the early years of life itself. Thus, they should not be consumed as per one’s wish but should be taken in prescribed limits.

As per the different studies, the biological reason for this relationship is still not known and very much clear. These H2 antagonist medicines tend to affect the genes and increase some of the DNA activities and decrease others. This could be one of the reasons behind the early deaths, and the risks involved.
